The cut flower production under polyhouse in the south Konkan region of Maharashtra has been studied to find the profitability under polyhouse conditions and identify the constraints faced by the polyhouse owners. The data have been collected from 10 polyhouses for the year 2005 for the flowers of gerbera, anthorium, orchid and rose. The profit at different cost levels has been found maximum in orchid and minimum in rose. The inputoutput ratio has worked out to be 1:1.46 in anthorium, 1: 1.30 in orchid, 1:1.20 in gerbera and 1:1.05 in rose. Thus, production of anthorium under polyhouse condition has been found most profitable, followed by orchid and gerbera. The constraints identified include lengthy loan procedure, high cost of production, and non-availability of quality seedlings. In the case of marketing, the major constraints reported by the farmers include nonpayment of prices by commission agents in accordance with the grade of flowers, non-transfer of payments to producers in time and high cost of transportation.
