Abstract

The paper has studied the economics of main consumable products of sugarcane with the objectives of comparing value-added products of sugarcane, viz. sugar, jaggery and sugar juice and has identified the major marketing channels along with feasibility of other value-added products in jaggery. The study has adopted multistage sampling technique for selecting the sampling units at various levels in the year 2008–09. The study has revealed that among the value-added products of sugarcane, sugar juice production is more profitable, which needs indepth study of technical and financial feasibility on a large scale as its keeping quality is a major constraint. It has been observed that by mere change in the form of jaggery from lumps to cubes, a farmer could get an additional income of Rs 1500/q of jaggery tanamounting to net additional income of about Rs 1 lakh/ha.
