Abstract

The paper has studied the value chain in export of grapes and has identified the problems faced by the farmers in export of grapes to UK and grapes and has identified the problems faced by the farmers in export of grapes to UK and Netherlands by collecting data from grapes-grower exporters from the districts of Pune and Ahmednagar. It has been found that of the total quantity produced by grape growers, 63.6 per cent is exported and 35.7 per cent is sold in the domestic market. It has been observed that 87 per cent of grapes are exported to the Gulf countries, 6 per cent to UK and 7 per cent to Netherlands. Analysis of price spread in grapes export has revealed that farmers could receive 31–34 per cent share in consumer rupee in UK and 39–40 per cent in Netherlands. It has been found that Thomson, Sharad, Ganesh and Sonaka varieties have high demand in the UK and Netherland markets. ‘Thomson’ is a largely cultivated grape variety but Sonaka has the highest productivity in the study area. The study ahs observed significant scope for increasing grapes exports from India. Also, farmers’ access to latest information about production and market price should be increased for a better value chain management.
