The paper has looked at MGNREGA analytically and has provided details about funding, employment generation, works undertaken, etc. since its inception in 2005. The outlay for Scheme is 40,000 crore for the financial year 2010-11. The study has outlined some of the criticisms being levied against MGNREGA. To study the impact of MGNREGA in Surandai village of Tirunelveli district in Kerala, data were collected from the panchayat office and also from 20 beneficiaries of the Scheme using a well-disigned questionnaire. The aspects covered in the study include variation in wages in market and under MGNREGA, nature of works undertaken, and economic impact on the beneficiaries of the Scheme.
