To feed its growing population, India faces a big challenge of improving agricultural productivity along with conserving natural resources. The Indian rural economy suffers from poverty, unemployment, malnutrition, limited diversification of farming and degradation of natural resources. For the farming community, livelihood diversification is essential for poverty reduction, food security, and improved income. This study is focused on sustainable agriculture, its role in rural livelihood security, and major issues in sustainable agriculture. The paper has explored how sustainable agricultural policies can better serve the goals of poverty reduction and livelihood security in the rural areas. It has also discussed policies and institutions for securing rural livelihood.
