Growth and Instability in Agriculture of Jammu Region

Abstract

The study has analyzed the dynamic changes in land-use pattern relating to growth, instability, elasticity as well as sustainability of major crops in the Jammu region based on the data collected for a period of 30 years, from 1981 to 2010. The study has revealed that there was overall growth in area, production and yield of rice of 0.24 per cent, 1.61 per cent and 1.32 per cent, respectively. In the case of maize, the growth was 1.40 per cent in area, 0.75 per cent in production and -0.19 per cent in yield. In wheat, the growth was 0.8 per cent in area, 2.44 per cent in production and 1.58 per cent in yield. The pulses recorded growth rates of -2.51 per cent in area, -7.37 per cent in production and 2.78 per cent in yield. The value of overall instability was the highest (24.8%) for pulses, followed closely by wheat (23.9%), rice (16.1%) and was lowest for maize (11.7%).
