The study has estimated the growth in area, production and yield of major vegetables and has identified the sources of growth and instability in vegetable production. The contribution of crops, region and state towards country's variability in vegetable production has also been estimated. The study conducted in the northern part of Karnataka has covered four vegetables, viz. onion, potao, tomato and brinjal and 34-year period from 1977–78 to 2011–12. The period was divided into two sub-periods, viz. 1977–78 to 1984–85 (pre-National Horticulture Board) and 1985–86 to 2011–12 (post-NHB). The compound growth rates and Hazell's decomposition technique have been used to study instability in vegetable production in north Karnataka, Karnataka and country as a whole. The variability in the production of these ‘Other vegetables’ has contributed maximum to the instability of their production. The analysis of location-wise contribution to the total increase in vegetable production has shown that ‘Other states’, other than Karnataka, contributed maximum to almost all the selected vegetables. Similarly, south Karnataka contributed considerably to the total increase in vegetable production in the state.
