This study has identified the factors that play a dominant role in transformation of the traditional farmers to entrepreneurs and has also investigated its socio-economic impact. The problems being faced by agricultural entrepreneurs have been listed along with suggestions for policies for inclusive development through agricultural entrepreneurship. This study was conducted in the Dharmapuri district of Tamil Nadu with sample respondents of 100 farmers-cum-entrepreneurs and 100 non-entrepreneurs with similar income and landholding. The study has revealed that the major influencing factors in entrepreneurship development were age, education, financial facility, motivation and intention. It has also been found that the socio-economic status of the rural farm households had increased due to adoption of entrepreneurial activity. The adoption of entrepreneurial activity had increased the employment opportunities the extent of 58 per cent and income of the household by 59 per cent. The asset position, savings as well as the consumption expenditure had all increased. It took six months to two years to start a new enterprise. The study has revealed the role of public organizations and institutions in developing entrepreneurship among the rural households in the state.
