Role of Gender in Adoption of New Agricultural Technology: The Case Study of a Seed Variety in India

The paper has examined the association between the gender difference and adoption of a submergence-tolerant rice seed variety, called Swarna Sub-1, in eastern India. This study is based on the data collected from 731 farmers who live in the submergence-prone areas in Uttar Pradesh and Odisha in eastern India. The sample comprised 157 adopter farmers selected from the recipient lists of 50 villages, and 574 randomly selected farmers from the same villages. The Probit model was used to measure the determinants of adoption of Swarna sub-1 and particularly, the role of female-headed households on adoption of this variety.
