Study on Economics of Potato Growing for Livelihood Security

The study has examined the cost structure and economics of production and marketing of potato in sub-tropical zone of Jammu. It is based on the primary data collected from 225 farmers of 15 villages in three districts, viz. Jammu, Kathua and Samba of Jammu & Kashmir. To study the economics of potato crop, simple cost accounting method was followed. The price used in the analysis was the average for the crop harvesting period 2011–12. The study has revealed that the majority of farmers were literate with large family size and small landholdings. The total average sale price of potato crop was 549/quintal, and the average net income was 60255/ha. The study has suggested some measures to address the constraints being felt by the potato growers in the area. It has also recommended some policy measures for providing more income livelihood security in this area.
