This study has investigated the spatial and temporal changes in growth of area, production and productivity in horticultural enterprises from 1991–92 to 2010–11. The exponential function was used to compute the growth rates and Markov chain analysis was conducted to find area shift from one enterprise to another. The study has indicated that there was more than fifteen per cent area shift from agriculture to horticulture during the second period (1991–92 to 2000–01), from the first period (2001–02 to 2010–11). The changes in economic factors, natural resource endowments and policies often induce temporal shifts in the cropping pattern across the districts. Most of the districts have witnessed positive growth in their area expansion during the study period. The highest positive growth rate was observed in Bidar district (6.1%) and highest negative growth rate was observed in Mandya district (4.7%).
