The economic impact of research in redgram has been analysed in Karnataka using economic surplus and partial budgeting approaches. For study, variety BRG 2 of redgram, released by the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, was considered and data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The estimated economic surplus due to adoption of redgram variety BRG 2 in Karnataka was 56.47 crore for the period 1995 to 2010, net present value was 26.02 crore and internal rate of return was 44 per cent on research investment. Due to increased yield, the consumers (75.11%) benefited more than the producers (24.89%) in Karnataka. The impact of research in redgram using partial budgeting technique has indicated that the total economic benefit realised by adopting the redgram variety BRG 2 in Karnataka was 3.84 crore per year. The study has indicated considerable scope for wide spread adoption of BRG 2 variety in Karnataka to augment redgram production in the state.
