This paper has studied the trends in sub-surface irrigation (well and tube well) in the Parbhani district of Maharashtra by collecting secondary data for the period 1991–92 to 2010–11. The span of 20 years was split into two sub-periods, viz. period-I form 1991–2000 and period-II from 2001–2011. The study has indicated that the overall growth of wells in the district was not constant. The overall growth rate in the number of oil pumps was highest in Selu and lowest in Jintur taluka. The CGR of surface irrigated area was found highest in Palamtaluka and lowest in Selutaluka during the study period. The CGR of both wells and tubewells jointly was highest in Palamtaluka and lowest in Sonpethtaluka. The area and percentage of irrigation in the Parbhani district were highest for the wheat crop than other crops under study.
