In this study, the economic impact of research on redgram in Karnataka has been analyzed and quantified using economic surplus and partial budgeting approaches. For this, the variety BRG 2 of redgram, released by the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore, was considered as this variety has shown appreciably increasing adoption over time. The data were collected from both primary and secondary sources. The estimated economic surplus due to adoption of BRG 2 redgram variety in Karnataka was 56.47 crore for the period 1995 to 2010, net present value (NPV) was 26.02 crore and internal rate of return (IRR) was 44 per cent on research investment. Due to increased yield and production, the consumers (75.11%) benefited more than the producers (24.89%) in Karnataka. The total economic benefit realized by adoption of variety BRG 2 of redgram in Karnataka was estimated as 3.84 crore per year. The study has indicated that there is a scope for for dissemation of BRG 2 variety to augment redgram production in Karnataka.
