Backyard Poultry Tool for Poverty Alleviation in Bastar District of Chhattisgarh

The backyard poultry rearing helps in accelerating the pace of poverty reduction, provides direct benefits, generates employment, promotes gender equality and provides a reach to the poorest of poor. In the study multistage procedure was used to select 120 respondents and a semi-structured questionnaire was used to collect information from the respondents. The data collected were analyzed using statistical tools like frequency counts and percentage. The study has shown that average selling price of egg in the Bastar district was 7/egg and the average selling price of live birds was 310/kg. The average number of eggs consumed in the Bastar district was 22 eggs per person per year and the average meat consumed was 3.3 kg per person per year. The study has concluded that backyard poultry serves as means of income generation, source of protein, poverty eradication and employment for tribal households. However inadequate animal healthcare and poor extension services, coupled with marketing strategies limit the contribution of poultry to household livelihoods.
