Abstract

The paper has discussed the linkages between rapid growth in livestock production to meet its growing demand, its impact on natural resources and formulation of strategies for a balanced livestock-fodder trajectory. The paper is based on both primary and secondary data. The growth momentum in livestock and livestock products has exhibited positive trend in cross-bred cattle, buffalo, small ruminants, pashmina goats, milk production, meat, wool and pashmina fibre. On the basis of managing substantial growth in milk production, Jammu & Kashmir occupied second rank at national level. The factor-product relationship has revealed a widespread explanatory variance in feed and fodder and needs rational adjustments. The profitability of livestock enterprise hinges around availability of adequate feed and fodder. The paper has discussed the need for timely consideration of this problem, so that synergies between rapid growth in livestock production/products, feed resources, fragile eco-system of the hills, livelihoods vis-a-vis pressure on land-based resources could be pursued.
