This study has measured the growth, instability and structural changes in the export of non-basmati rice from Tamil Nadu ports by collecting data for the period 1998–2013 and Computing Coppock Instability Index. The study has revealed that export of Matta, Sonamasuri, Idly rice, and Ponni varieties had grown with high instability. In terms of milling type, the full boiled and raw rice had grown significantly at 9.4 per cent and 8.65 per cent per annum, respectively with high instability. The Sonamasuri and Ponni varieties, parboiled and raw rice milling types had high probability of retention than other varieties and milling types in export trade. The instability in export quantity and value was higher after rice export ban period than the pre-ban period. Among the importing countries, Singapore, UAE and Sri Lanka had higher probability of retention of share of non-basmati rice export.
