Abstract

The paper has studied different aspects of meat export from India by collecting time-series data for the period 1987 to 2013. The data were evaluated for two different periods, viz. pre-WTO period (1987–88 to 199495), post-WTO period (1995–96 to 2013–14) and the overall period (1987–2013). The period-wise compound growth rates for export of buffalo meat, sheep and goat meat, animal casings, processed meat and other meat products have indicated that export of meat from India increased during post-WTO period. During pre-WTO period, the instability indices for different types of meat products have been found relatively stable as compared to post-WTO and overall period. The study has revealed that except animal casings, export of all types of meat products from India has no comparative advantage at international level. During the study period, the stable importing countries were Malaysia, UAE, Oman and Mauritius of buffalo meat; UAE and Saudi Arabia of sheep and goat meet; Portugal of animal casings; Oman of processed meat; and Bahrain, Bhutan and Nepal of other meats from India. The study has suggested that India should evolve appropriate policy to increase the share of Indian meat in the international market.
