Achieving Food and Nutritional Security and Food Safety in India: Challenges and Constraints

India has achieved self-sufficiency in foodgrains production, but this paper has discussed the issue in terms of sustainability of this achievement in the years to come in view of diversion of farm land to non-farm uses. The study has also computed the demand for rice, wheat and pulses for the period 2015–2030. The paper has dealt the related issue of nutritional security and by collecting data on calorie-intake in different states of India, it has revealed that a large percentage of households consume less than 1890 calories/capita in these states — Gujarat (24%), Kerala (23.7%), Tamil Nadu (28.2%), Maharashtra (21.9%). The third issue dealt by the paper is of food safety. The study has suggested that there is the need of educating the manufactures about the benefits of food safety, quality standards, new markets and over profitability.
