Growth and Instability in Rice Production in Jorhat District of Assam

The study has examined the growth and instability of three types of rice, viz. autumn, summer and winter, in the Jorhat district of Assam using compound growth rates, instability index and coefficient of variation. The analysis has shown that summer rice has a positive growth in terms of area and production, while winter rice has recorded positive and significant growth in terms of yield with low degree of variation. The autumn rice has shown a decreasing trend in terms of area, production and yield. Incorporation of more area under summer rice might be the reason for negative growth in area under autumn rice. However, there is a huge potential in crop improvement as well as increasing rice production in this region. Considering the increase in population pressure and subsequent need for higher yield, it is suggested that farmers should follow modern technologies for more rice production in Assam.
