The study has measured trends in production and total factor productivity growth of sugarcane crop in the state of Maharashtra using compound growth rates and Cuddy Della instability index and Tornquist-Theil chained Divisia index. The farm-level data on yield, level of inputs use and their prices for the period 1989–90 to 200809 have been collected from the cost of cultivation scheme. The study has indicated that though area and production of sugarcane crop have increased, the productivity growth has been less in Marathwada region as well as in Maharashtra state. There has been no substantial growth in sugarcane output in the region. Use of chemical fertilizers and number of irrigations in sugarcane cultivation have increased in the region. There has been a growth in total factor productivity of sugarcane crop in Maharashtra state. The area under irrigation, area under high-yielding varieties, number of tractors and road density have depicted positive and significant impact on TFP of sugarcane crop in Maharashtra.
