The study has analysed agricultural growth and contribution of various components to this growth in the Konkan region of Maharashtra at different points of time, viz. 1981–1990, 1991–2000, 2001–2010 and 19812010. Although rice is a predominant food across the four districts of Konkan region, the study has observed a decline in its area as is evident from the negative growth rate of 0.35 per cent over the overall period. In fact, the area under total foodgrains has been found to decrease continuously. The growth in production and productivity of rice has increased by 0.87 per cent and 1.22 per cent, respectively. The growth in production and productivity of total cereals, total foodgrains, total oilseeds and total pulses has also increased over the study period. The growth in output of selected crops has been delineated in three effects, viz. area effect, yield effect and interaction effect. In rice, the yield effect has contributed highest output growth (147-57%), while area and interaction elements have made negative contributions to the extent of 35–96 and 11.62 per cent, respectively. In total foodgrains production, the yield effect has contributed as high as 98.27 per cent of total output growth, while area and interaction elements have made positive contributions to the extent of 0.76 per cent, respectively.
