Diversification of Existing Farming Systems in Pune District of Maharshtra

Abstract

The paper has studied the impact of agricultural diversification on profitability, livelihood security, nutritional security and capacity building by selecting 24 farmers in Pune district of Maharashtra and collecting data for kharif 2013 and rabi 2014 seasons. The crop diversification has been studied in terms of change in cropping pattern and adoption of improved varieties. The livestock diversification has been investigated in terms of supply of artificial insemination, mineral mixture, goat kids are poultry chicks. The product diversification has been in terms of value addition. The study has revealed that agricultural diversification increased the farmers’ income— 62.6 per cent from crop component, 67.9 per cent from animal component and 24.3 per cent from product processing. The study has also reported constraints to agricultural diversification in this region. The paper has recommended its dissemination on a wider scale among the farmers.
