The study has estimated the growth in area, production, and productivity of chilli in India and has looked into export and import performance as well as competitiveness of chilli by taking data from various published sources or websites for the period 1980–81 to 200-10. The growth trend in area, production and productivity has been found non-significant during the study period. However, the export performance of chilli during this period has been encouraging with a positive and significant growth trend in both quantity and value. The instability analysis of chilli export from India has depicted more stability during the post-WTO (1995–96 to 2009–10) and pre-WTO (1980–81 to 1994–95) period. The nominal protection coefficient (NPC) values of chilli have shown that crop was more protected during the pre-WTO period (0.97) than post-WTO (0.82) period, which indicates moderate export competitiveness.
