Demand for and Supply of Oilseeds in Maharashtra

The study has projected the demand for and supply of oilseeds by the years 2019 and 2029 based on the past performance of production and consumption of oilseeds in the state of Maharashtra. For these projections, the study has considered two productivity (constant and increased @ 2.02%), and two state income growth rates (7.5% and 8.0%) scenarios, and two population growth rate situations (decrease in rural and increase in urban population by 0.04% per annum (situation I) and 0.05% per annum (situation II). Under constant productivity assumption assuming the 7.50 per cent per annum growth in state income, the gap between availability and demand for oilseeds would be 28.28 lakh tonnes and 28.61 lakh tonnes, respectively under situations I and II, by 2019 and 110.15 lakh tonnes and 111.55 lakh tonnes by 2029. Under increased productivity, the gap between availability and demand for oilseeds by 2029 would be 83.95 lakh tonnes and 85.35 lakh tonnes at 7.50 per cent per annum growth rate in the state income, and 95.06 lakh tonnes and 96.43 lakh tonnes at 8.00 per cent annual growth in the state income. Considering the gap between supply and demand of oilseeds in the state, the study has suggested adoption of new technology for increasing supply of oilseeds in Maharashtra.
