Growth and Decomposition Analysis of Tur

The study has estimated the growth rates and acreage response of tur in the selected districts of eastern Vidarbha zone by analysing past 30 years time series data. The study has indicated that the compound growth rates were positive for all the districts and also EVZ for tur cultivation. The area under tur cultivation has increased by 1.6 per cent per annum in the eastern Vidarbha zone. The growth rate for production in eastern Vidarbha zone as a whole was estimated as 2.18 per cent per annum in the past thirty years. The regression coefficients for one year lagged farm harvest prices have been found positive for all the district and also statistically significant. The farmers decision regarding area allocation was much affected by one year lagged area. The smaller values of short-run price elasticities as compared to those of long-run elasticity have indicated that the farmers were relatively market-oriented in their decision in the long-run rather than in short-run in respect to tur. It also indicates that area adjustment would take place in the long-run. Tur has appeared to be one of the important emerging crops in the Eastern Vidarbha Zone and it has become an additional crop in the cropping pattern of the region due to good market prices. The study has recommended allocation of more area to tur crop by providing high yielding varieties and introducing pulse development programme through Government of Maharashtra.
