This paper using location coefficient (L), cropping diversification and CGR as analytical tools, has revealed a positive growth for current fallow, net area sown, total cropped area and area sown more than once. There has been a sharp increase in the concentration of forest area, area sown more than once and lands put to non-agricultural purposes. The cropping intensity has steadily increased over time reaching 149.0 per cent during 2011–12. The per cent diversification for total crops in the state has been found to vary from 1.60 in 2001–02 to 0.64 in 2011–12. The study has suggested that incorporation of more high-value crops in the cropping system would increase both farm income and cropping intensity in Assam.
