Abstract

This paper has studied the growth and variability in production of vegetables in Karnataka during the period 1977–78 to 2011–12 using compound growth rates and Hazell's decomposition technique. In general, a significant growth in area, production and yield of vegetables has been observed during the study period at both state and national levels. The crop-wise analysis has revealed that ‘Other vegetables’ (other than selected for the study) have contributed considerably to the total increase in vegetable production over the study period. It was interesting to note that variability in the production of ‘Other vegetables’ contributed maximum to the instability of their production. The analysis of location-wise contribution to the total increase in vegetable production has shown that ‘Other states’ (other than Karnataka) had contributed maximum to almost all the selected vegetables.
