Abstract

This study has estimated economic gains from sericulture in the Jammu division by selecting 240 respondents randomly from three districts, namely Rajouri, Reasi and Poonch, and collecting data using a pretested structured interview schedule. The study has revealed that on overall basis, the total cost of cultivation per household of silkworm rearer was 7367 and gross returns from cocoon production and its by-products were 14066/household, though these varied from 16250/household in Reasi, followed by 14961/household in Rajouri and 7778/household in Poonch. Thus, there was a significant difference across the silkworm-rearers’ income in Rajouri, Poonch and Reasi districts. The overall benefit-cost ratio has been found to be 1.85.
