Abstract

To increase the income of farmers and promote the role of private sector in agricultural marketing, the Government of Gujarat had initiated reforms in 2007 which have resulted in better realization of producers’ share in consumer's rupee. The state has made APMCs more vibrant, developed strong infrastructure, management and transparency so that the income of farmers could increase. With the introduction of contract farming, income of farmers has almost doubled. The state has also facilitated development of marketing infrastructure through private sector investments and avenues for alternate marketing channels for farmers. The paper has emphasized on the need for alternative marketing models to increase market efficiency and competitiveness, facilities for specialized functions, such as exports, institutional buyers, sale in distant of markets, pricing as per quality, adequate storage facilities, etc. All these efforts would lead to more availability of agricultural produce and higher income to farmers and this will provide better nutritional security at individual, state and country levels.
