Adoption Pattern and Profitability of Mint Cultivation in Tiger Land of Uttar Pradesh

Abstract

The present study on menthol mint (Mentha arvensis, family lamiaceae) cultivation technology adoption has been carried out in tribal farmer's field of Dudhwa Tiger Reserve of Uttar Pradesh. During the study period, 50 demonstrations of menthol mint cultivation were conducted on the farmers’ fields of two villages, namely Dhuskia (Chandan Chowki range) and Chhedia Paschim (Bankati range) of Dudhawa under Lakhimpur Kheri district. The primary data were collected from the selected farmers on adoption pattern and profitability of mint cultivation. The socio-economic and resource structure was worked out by analysing family size, literacy rate, occupation, cropping pattern, farm assists and average landholding size. The study has revealed that medium level adoption of menthol mint cultivation is higher, followed by high and low level adoptions. The total cost of cultivation and gross return of menthol mint have been found to be 37239/ha and 71400/ha, respectively. The net return has been computed as 34161/ha and the B: C ratio has been observed as 2.43 and 1.92 at cost A1 and Cost C, respectively. The study has recommended that menthol cultivation should be promoted in the area to improve income and consequently nutritional status in this area.
