The paper has analysed the status of pulses production, farmers’ opinion and effect of National Food Security Mission-Pulses implementation, and has highlighted the constraints in increasing pulses production in Rajasthan. The study is based on both secondary and primary level data. The results have indicated that the farmers cultivate pulses on very small area, mostly under unirrigated condition. The cultivation of pulses has been found more profitable. The lower yield, insect pest problem, root rot, low profitability and instability in production of pulses have been identified as the major problems faced by the farmers. The farmers have suggested for direct subsidy, better facilities of marketing, technology and irrigation. The study has opined that Rajasthan can easily be turned into pulse bowl of the country, meeting the short fall that country faces continuously in pulses. Farmers are interested to grow pulses as it is comparatively more profitable. Therefore, emphasis should on providing assured market with remunerative price for pulses. The government should adopt crop-specific and region-specific approach for higher production of pulses.
