Assessment of Factors Influencing Livestock Holding Pattern in North-Eastern Karnataka Region

The study has assessed the impact of determinants, purpose and constraints in livestock holding and its effects on production of crop. The primary data for the study were collected from 120 respondents from North-Eastern Karnataka district in 2010–11. The study has revealed that the coefficients of total landholding, and bullock pair usage was positive and significant. The coefficient of dummy rainfed region was negative and significant. The study has also pointed out that the main purpose of livestock keeping in NEK region was to supply milk for the family, provide draft power and cow dung and urine as manure. The major constraints faced by the farmers in livestock production in the NEK region were feed and fodder, lack of labour, inadequate space for livestock, scarcity of water and increasing mechanization in farming. The study has suggested that livestockrearing being a profitable venture, the livestock farmers should be provided easy access to credit at subsidized rate of interest.
