This study has identified the expenditure share and amount of demand for major vegetables at the household level in India by utilizing consumer expenditure survey data collected by the National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) for the years 2004–05 and 2011–12. The study has indicated that consumption of vegetables in both rural and urban India is highly price and income elastic and hence has suggested reducing the demand-supply gap through improving the supply chain of vegetables. The study has suggested that government should develop infrastructures like cold storage and transportation to reduce post-harvest losses and therby reduce prices for consumers and increase in income of farmers.
