Impact of Sprinkler Irrigation System on Doubling Farmers’ Income and Water Use Efficiency of Tur in Northern Karnataka

Abstract

This study was conducted in two districts of Northern Karnataka, namely, Bidar and Kalaburgi by selecting 60 farmers practising sprinkler irrigation and 60 farmers practising conventional method of irrigation for cultivation of tur following purposive multistage random sampling procedure. The study has revealed that the per hectare net returns and B: C ratio obtained under the sprinkler irrigated farms were both high ( 86, 084/ha and 2.59, respectively) than under the conventional irrigated farms ( 50, 150/ha and 2.02, respectively). The discounted benefit cost ratio, net present value, internal rate of returns were higher and pay back period was lower in the case of sprinkler irrigated farms vis-à-vis conventionally irrigated farms. The water-use efficiency was also more under sprinkler irrigation system (2.64 q/ha cm) than under conventional method of irrigation (0.89 q/ha cm). Thus, cultivation of tur was found to be more profitable and financially feasible under the sprinkler irrigation system than under conventional method of irrigation.
