Abstract

This paper has focused on the impact of organic farming on farmer's income, consumption pattern and employment in the Sirkali block of Nagapattinum district, Tamil Nadu. India's total area under organic certification was 5.69 million hectares in 2013–14 with 10th global rank. The study is based on the primary information collected by personal interview method from the farmers of Agani, and Nimmeli villages of Srikali block of Nagapattinum district. The sample of 15 farmers in organic and 15 farmers in inorganic farming systems were selected randomly. The study revealed that organic growers earned 10/kg as profit, whereas inorganic growers earned only 2.50/kg as profit. Organic farm families spent nearly 20000 more than inorganic farm families on consumption of food and non-food items. The organic growers spend 0.78 towards consumption when their disposable income increases by one rupee. The annual employment level increased two-times in organic farms compared to inorganic farms. Therefore, the study has suggested that adoption of organic farming can help in increasing farmers’ income.
