The study was carried out in the Medak district of Telangana state to characterize the state farming systems. The has study revealed that out of 247 farm households, 124 were categorized as marginal, followed by 72 small, 34 medium and 17 large farm households. Further, only crops based farming system (145) was found to be the major the farming system among all the four farming groups, followed by crops + dairy (52), crops + goatery and crops + horticulture (22), crops + horticulture + dairy (6). In crops + dairy based farming system income generation was highest from crops (57.85%) followed by dairy (42.15%) and same was in case of crops + goatery. Overall, employment of labour was highest in crops + goatery based farming system (704 man-days/year), followed by crops + horticulture + dairy based farming system (553 man-days/year), crops + dairy (617 man-days/year), crops + horticulture (457 man-days/year) and in only crops based farming system employment generation was (404 man-days/year). Diversified farming systems were found to be economically more stable and viable.
