Status of Vegetable Production in Uttarakhand: Trend Analysis in Area, Production and Productivity

This study has revealed of trends in growth of area, production and productivity of vegetables in Uttarakhand from 2002–03 to 2011–12. The secondary data were collected from Department of Horticulture & Food Processing, Uttarakhand. The data were tabulated and analysed using appropriate statistical tools. The study has revealed that growth in area under vegetable cultivation in the early years of formation of the state had a decreasing trend @1.83 per cent (38282 ha to 29941 ha), but it rejuvenated and showed an increasing trend @1.85 per cent from 2004–05 to 2010–11 (50845 ha to 59254 ha). Due to the complex, diverse and risk-prone nature of the hill agriculture, the growth in vegetable production over the years has fluctuated between 0.58 per cent to 0.85 per cent (392384 Mt to 580638 Mt). During the period under study, the average productivity of vegetables was found around 10 Mt per hectare.
