An economic analysis of resource-use efficiency, productivity and crop diversification in West Burdwan district of West Bengal

Abstract

The present study aims to analyze crop diversification in terms of variations in cropping pattern with respect to land and productive resources distribution. During the last three decades, the cropping pattern in West Bengal has progressively led by paddy both aus and boro, rapeseed and mustard, jute, potato. Pulses have lost, both in terms of area and yield. The technical efficiency (TE), allocative efficiency (AE) and economic efficiency (EE) are evaluated using DEAP software. To find out the resources use efficiency five variables namely, seed, fertilizer, irrigation, tractor and human labour were considered. The EE scores for crops grown under rainfed conditions range from 0.03 in case of cowpea to 0.85 for sugarcane. The TE scores for rainfed conditions ranged from 0.46 in case of cowpea to 0.98 in for sugarcane. The EE scores for crops grown under irrigated condition range from 0.10 in the case of red gram and green gram to 0.57 for Paddy. The TE scores for irrigated condition ranged from 0.41 in the case of green-gram to 0.97 in the case of paddy. The positive value of marginal value productivity to factor cost indicates that there is further scope to increase investment on inputs on marginal and medium size farms. All factors realize more return than the cost.
