Abstract

This paper explores the trends in area, production and yield of major pulse crops i.e. chickpea and pigeon pea grown in Gujarat. Results show a positive growth in area, production and yield of pulses during 2001–02 to 2016–17. The decomposition analysis brings forth the role of area expansion in increasing production. Import of total pulses was higher than export of total pulses. Chickpea contributed higher proportion for both total export and import in India. To meet the growing requirement, the country has to produce an adequate amount of pulses as well as remain competitive to keep the domestic production. Overall performance of pulse crops was quite impressive.
