Rice is a staple food for 65% of the people in India and it supplies 20% of the required calories. Green revolution technologies transformed agricultural practices resulting in a considerable increase in yield and production of rice. However, its sustainability is questioned in recent years mainly due to the indiscriminate use of fertilizer and non-judicious use of pesticides to produce more crops with limited resources. The wider use of subsidized inputs leads to pollution, health hazards, environmental degradation and declining ecosystem services. A strong commitment both ideologically and at policy levels in this regard is required to solve the maladies of indiscriminate use of inputs on natural resources.
