Total factor productivity in rice and sources of growth in West Bengal

The present study was conducted to measure the total factor productivity in rice and its sources of growth in West Bengal during 1994–95 to 2013–14. Törnqvist Theil Index was applied to measure total factor productivity using the output and input data of rice crop. Results revealed a decline in area under rice cultivation. The maximum share of human labour in total variable cost indicates rice cultivation as labour intensive. Fall in the growth rate of bullock labour and sharp increase in machine labour showed better adoption of mechanization. The state experienced a positive and significant total factor productivity growth throughout. Expenditure on agricultural research and education and, number of tractors had positive and significant effect on total factor productivity growth.
