The present study was conducted in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir state to compare the economics and marketing of cereals with fruits and vegetables. A multi stage sampling was adopted for the selection of samples, with block, villages and farmers as the first, second and third stage sampling units. Chenani block was selected purposively whereas Mantalai, Kosar, Bupp and Bashat villages were selected randomly. Per hectare Cost A were found to be highest (Rs. 55018) for the cultivation of Garlic and lowest for radish (Rs. 25505). Similarly, Cost C were also highest for garlic (Rs 59018/ha) and lowest for radish (Rs. 35505/ha). Per hectare net returns were found to be highest (Rs. 258273) in tomato and for cucumber (Rs. 14616) among vegetables. In case of fruit crops, the Cost C for walnut, apricot and plum were 26419, 4915 and 2598 respectively. Net returns were found to be highest in walnut. The returns from cultivation of maize and mustard were found significantly lower than those of fruits and vegetables. These results show that even cultivation of vegetables and fruits is a better preposition than cultivation of cereals and oilseeds. These results clearly signify that farmers of the area should diversify towards cultivation of fruits and vegetables.
