A framework for achieving SDG's through sustainable dairy development in India: Case study of a typical farm in Haryana

Smallholder dairying has been and will be the backbone of Indian dairy industry in the medium and long term. With the launch of the UN sustainability and climate goals 2015, national and global stakeholders have begun to work in unison for the first time in a big way. The paper looks into developing a framework for analyzing options and strategies to develop smallholder milk production keeping the sustainability dimensions as propounded by the UN through a case study involving a typical two dairy animal household farms from Haryana. The typical farm approach followed by IFCN enables to benchmark globally and compare scenarios/strategies before implementing them in the field. The 17 SDGs with a broader perspective and 169 targets covers all the DSF criteria though with overlaps and interdependencies (DSF, 2018). Thus, the typical two animal dairy farm in Haryana is benchmarked and analysed for scenarios covering the goals of sustainable increase in milk productivity and farm profitability (goal 2); The IFCN typical farm approach follows a bottom up life cycle approach from cradle to market for assessing farm impact and is very much suitable for planning to develop and optimize scenarios to achieve the SDGs. Simulation of dairy development scenarios shows prospective solutions to achieve the SDG goal of no hunger through increasing productivity, income and cost competitiveness.
