In India, watershed development programs are acting as prime tools to eradicate poverty in rural areas. The review of watershed development programmes in India reveals that this programme focuses on conservation of natural resources and enhances agricultural production. There has been a paradigm shift in watershed development in India. The focus has shifted from development to management besides meager of all inter-related watershed programmed into integrated watershed development programme. The review clearly indicates that the watershed development programmes have positive long term impact on agriculture, poverty alleviation, conservation of natural resources and commodity empowerment.
