Using data from a household survey in the Indian state of Gujarat, this paper examines the determinants and welfare impacts of farm households’ participation in farmer producer organizations (FPOs). Small and marginal farmers participate in FPOs to improve their access to credit, storage, output and input markets and their bargaining power vis-à-vis traders. Households associated with FPOs have a higher level of income, consumption and investment and a lower incidence of indebtedness.
