Growth and disparities in rural employment: district-level analysis of Uttar Pradesh

In densely populated Uttar Pradesh, poverty is widespread, employment is low and per capita income is much lower than in other states or the national per capita income. The share of its agriculture, industry and services sectors in the national gross domestic product (GDP) is about 8%. The rural non-farm sector is too diverse in respect of non-farm activities, unit size and geographic diversification. The rural economy includes several heterogeneous rural activities having different demand and supply conditions in their input and output markets.
