Technical efficiency and factors influencing technical efficiency of sericulture production in the Jammu region: a stochastic frontier approach

Abstract

This paper assesses the level of technical efficiency in sericulture production in the Jammu region of J&K state. The study is based on cross-sectional data collected through primary survey during the year 2017–18 from 270 silkworm rearers. A mean technical efficiency of around 62% was observed in all the districts. The results demonstrate that the cocoon crop is lucrative as cocoon growers enjoyed increasing returns to scale. In general, farm size, household size and experience had a significant effect on technical efficiency. The study stresses the need for extension agents to make silkworm rearers aware of scientific cocoon crop management practices and train them to enhance production and cocoon yield.
