This study compares the growth of registered SHGs with that of unregistered SHGs. We selected two SHGs in Sangrur district: Kirat from Chatha Nanhera village in Sunam block and Zariya from Ladal village in Lehragaga block. Both SHGs were trained by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Sangrur, but whereas Kirat was registered under the National Rural Livelihoods Mission (NRLM) and financed by NABARD, Zariya was unregistered and selffinanced. Kirat's annual income rose from Rs. 78, 450 in 2016 to Rs. 3, 35, 299 in 2018, but Zariya's annual income, Rs. 1, 44, 000 in 2017, stayed the same. It is inferred that SHGs need to register under government departments and use the advantages offered to alleviate poverty and empower women.
