Abstract

After India gained independence in 1947, it had to rebuild its economy. The leaders of those times had to pick the type of economy India would be and also outline economic planning. Under the five year plans, many rural development programmes were launched. Some of these programmes proved to be game-changers in transforming the economy and the lifestyle of rural India. The Integrated Child Development Scheme helped improve the health and nutritional status of children (0–6 years) and pregnant and lactating mothers. The Indira Awaas Yojana provided houses in rural areas. The Swarnajayanti Gram Swarojgar Yojanato provided sustainable income to the poorest rural people.
